David A.S. Roper

David has practiced exclusively in the area of criminal law, with an impressive record of defending clients against a wide range of charges.

An Associate at Der Barristers, David is a dynamic member of the team who has cultivated a reputation for relentless dedication and a keen understanding of the law.

Born and raised in Toronto, David moved to Calgary during his formative years.  Here, a shared passion for hockey led to an influential player-coach relationship with Senior Partner, Balfour Der, K.C., on the hockey rink with the Calgary Royals.

As a passionate hockey player, David played Junior ‘A’ hockey for the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and was named captain in his final year.  Prioritizing education over continuing with a hockey career, he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Economics and Finance from the University of Guelph.  The next chapter of his journey took him across the Atlantic to the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he earned his law degree.

Returning to Calgary, David reconnected with his former hockey coach, Balfour Der, K.C., leading to his association with Der Barristers.  Initially, he handled various business responsibilities for the firm including accounting, finance, marketing, IT, and Human Resources, all while preparing for a career in criminal law.  Through the National Committee of Accreditation (NCA), David earned his eligibility to practice law in Canada, and subsequently articled under the direct supervision of Balfour Der, K.C.

Since being called to the Alberta Bar, David has practiced exclusively in the area of criminal law, with an impressive record of defending clients against a wide range of charges.  His command of the courtroom is testament to his advanced understanding and application of the law.  David’s accomplishments include successful defences in cases involving sexual assault, robbery, SafeRoads IRS, break and enter, harassment, drug trafficking, assault, constitutional challenges, Criminal Review Board hearings, and appeals to the Court of Appeal of Alberta.  He has also worked as co-counsel with other senior members of the firm on serious cases such as murder, manslaughter, dangerous operation causing death, and appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada.

David approaches every case with focused determination, which is a demonstration of his belief in rigorous preparation.  His youthful perspective and his drive to excel set him apart, leading to innovative legal strategies that reflect an expertise well beyond his chronological career span.  David is also a proud member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association, and the Calgary Criminal Lawyer’s Association.

Away from the courtroom, David continues to play hockey and golf.  He has also recently embraced the challenge of teaching himself to play the piano, a testament to his enduring drive for personal growth.  At Der Barristers, David’s unyielding dedication and commitment to his clients have made him an invaluable addition to the team.
